Consultation & Engagement
There are more than 7,000 Métis identified through the 2016 Census in the CRD region. MNGV represents these Métis, who are all Section 35 rights holders. Although the Métis do not have land or territory in the region, we still have significant, broadly defined traditional rights that need to be respected. We are thankful for the First Peoples in sharing their territories with us and require similar levels of due diligence, consultation and engagement as other Aboriginal Peoples in Canada.
The Powley Decision (2003) and the Daniels Decision (2016) are both considerable cases that support the rights of Métis People across Canada.
